Direct Answer

IBBFA offers five credential levels: Certified Barre Instructor at $599, four Specialty Certifications at $375 each, Principal Instructor at the $1,497 IBBFA list price, Master Instructor at $2,997, and Fellow by invitation. Principal may also be available for $1,297 through direct enrollment at BarreCertification.com, while the post-CBI upgrade is $898.

CBI may be earned through the guided course, the $299 standalone examination, or a $199 examination pathway for graduates of an IBBFA Recognized Preparation Program. Each route must satisfy the current written and practical assessment requirements.

CBI enrollment includes two years of Active status and Principal enrollment includes three years, measured from enrollment. Afterward, annual maintenance requires the $99 payment plus CPD: either two qualifying live webinars, or one qualifying live webinar plus a competency assessment.

Three Preparation Pathways

One CBI credential, different ways to prepare

The preparation pathway does not appear as a different credential level. Course access and CEC eligibility may differ because those benefits are tied to completed education, not examination alone.

Guided Course

$599 CBI Course

35-hour self-paced education, study materials, practice support, written examination, and a live practical examination conducted by an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor.

Experienced Candidate

$299 Exam Only

No mandatory IBBFA coursework. Candidates prepare independently and complete the same credential assessment requirements.

Recognized Program Graduate

$199 Partner Exam

For eligible graduates of an IBBFA Recognized Preparation Program. Program tuition is separate from the IBBFA examination fee.

Current examination facts: The written examination contains 60 multiple-choice questions, requires 70% to pass, and draws from a 300+ question bank across five scored competency domains with Scope of Practice integrated throughout. Each attempt uses a different exam form, so no two written exams are identical. The separate CBI practical examination is conducted live by an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor, scored on a 155-point rubric, and results are delivered within five business days.

Level 1 · Foundation

Certified Barre Instructor

CBI is IBBFA's professional foundation credential within an NCCA-aligned credentialing framework. NCCA-aligned describes the structure of the credentialing process and does not mean that IBBFA is NCCA-accredited. The guided course covers anatomy and biomechanics, barre technique, class design, cueing, safety, professional practice, adaptive room management, and Scope of Practice.

The written examination contains 60 multiple-choice questions drawn from a 300+ question bank, with a 70% passing threshold. Each attempt uses a different exam form, so no two written exams are identical. Candidates also complete a live practical examination conducted by an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor. The practical is scored on a 155-point rubric, and results are delivered within five business days.

CBI Assessment

What the credential establishes

  • Knowledge across five scored competency domains
  • Scope of Practice integrated throughout the assessment
  • Live teaching examination evaluated against a 155-point practical rubric
  • Registry ID and public status record after requirements are met
  • Two years of Active status included from enrollment
  • NCCA-aligned credentialing structure, without claiming NCCA accreditation
Level 2 · Specialty Preparation

Four specialty certifications

Specialties deepen preparation for a defined population or format. They do not authorize medical diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, or work beyond the instructor's training and legal scope.

Prenatal and Postnatal

Pregnancy-stage considerations, postnatal return to exercise, modifications, warning signs, and referral boundaries.

Special Populations & Contraindications

Older adults, post-rehabilitation participants, common conditions, contraindication recognition, and referral decisions.

Ballerobica (High-Energy Barre)

Higher-energy barre, heart-rate and intensity management, dynamic sequencing, and format-specific safety decisions.

Advanced Barre

Advanced progressions, complex sequencing, equipment integration, musical interpretation, and higher-level class design.

Each specialty is currently $375. Each a la carte specialty completed adds one year to the instructor's existing Active-status expiration. The Principal Track includes access to all four specialty courses, but Principal candidates must complete at least two of four before Board Review.
Level 3 · Advanced

Principal Instructor

Principal is the advanced lead-instructor pathway for candidates who already hold CBI and have relevant teaching experience. It combines specialty preparation with a live Board Review conducted by a Master Instructor.

The IBBFA list price for Principal Instructor is $1,497. This reflects CBI at $599 plus the $898 Principal upgrade. Candidates enrolling directly through BarreCertification.com may access the $1,297 direct-enrollment price, a $200 savings. All routes require completion of the published Principal requirements before the credential is awarded.

Principal Requirements

Published completion standard

  • Current or previously earned IBBFA CBI credential
  • At least one year of relevant teaching experience
  • Completion of at least two of four IBBFA specialties
  • Board Preparation
  • Live Board Review with a Master Instructor
  • Three years of Active status included from Principal enrollment
Level 4 · Educator and Examiner

Master Instructor

Master candidates complete Principal, all four specialties, an observed teaching practicum, the Master examination, and current examiner preparation. Appointment or activity as an examiner is subject to IBBFA authorization and operational need.

Level 5 · Honorary

Fellow

Fellow is an invitation-only honorary recognition for sustained contribution to barre education or the profession. It is not a purchasable course and should not be presented as a routine promotion above Master.

Credential Maintenance

Earned credential and current standing are different facts

The registry preserves the credential history while separately showing whether the current maintenance period is Active or Lapsed.

Active

Current maintenance period

The credential is within its included period or the annual payment and continuing-competency requirement are current.

Lapsed

Current period ended

The credential remains on record, but the current Active period or renewal requirements are not current. Reactivation follows the policy in force.

Annual maintenance after the included period

Submit the $99 annual payment plus CPD during the renewal year: either two qualifying live webinars, or one qualifying live webinar plus a competency assessment.

Credentials FAQ

Common credential questions

What does the CBI examination include?
The CBI examination includes a 60-question written assessment drawn from a 300+ question bank, with a 70% passing score. No two written exams are identical. Candidates also complete a live practical examination conducted by an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor and scored on a 155-point rubric.
Who conducts the CBI and Principal practical examinations?
The CBI practical examination is conducted live by an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor and scored on a 155-point rubric. The Principal Board Review is conducted live by a Master Instructor.
Do a la carte specialty certifications extend Active status?
Yes. Each a la carte specialty certification completed adds one year to the instructor's existing Active-status expiration. This extension applies to specialties purchased and completed individually under the current pricing and operations policy.
Does Principal require all four specialties?
No. Access to all four specialty courses is included in the Principal Track, but completion of at least two of four is required before Board Review. Master requires all four.
Does an IBBFA credential guarantee employment or full classes?
No. A credential establishes a professional baseline. Employers still evaluate experience, references, safety credentials, specialty preparation, and live teaching. Attendance also depends on studio operations and the instructor's ability to teach the room.

Choose the Pathway That Matches Your Experience

Start with the guided CBI course, use the standalone examination when you are already prepared, or apply the recognized-program rate when eligible.

IBBFA credentials are fitness credentials, not medical licenses. They do not authorize diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, nutrition therapy, or practice outside applicable law and the instructor's education. Prices, access terms, assessment options, and partner benefits should match the current enrollment or checkout page before payment.
